The Lightning Estimator gives you a fast value estimate for any item — without committing to full AI research. It's perfect for sourcing decisions: should you buy this item or put it back on the shelf?
Two Ways to Estimate
Barcode Scan
Point your phone's camera at any UPC, EAN, or QR code. Lightning runs parallel lookups across:
- UPC product databases (identifies the exact product)
- Amazon pricing history (via Keepa data)
- eBay active and sold listings (real market comps)
Results start appearing within seconds as each source responds.
Photo Scan
Take a quick photo of the item. Lightning uses:
- Visual search against ListForge's Product Knowledge Base
- Google Lens-style image matching
- Comparable listing search based on identified product
Photo scans take slightly longer than barcodes but work for items without scannable codes — vintage goods, handmade items, bundles.
Reading the Results
Lightning results show:
- Estimated value range — low to high based on found comparables
- Source breakdown — which databases contributed data and their confidence
- Key comparables — actual sold and active listings with prices
Each source shows a status indicator (searching, found, no results) so you can see exactly where the data came from.
When to Use Lightning vs Full Research
| Scenario | Use |
|---|---|
| Checking if something's worth buying at a thrift store | Lightning |
| You already own the item and want to list it | Full Research |
| Quick price check at a garage sale | Lightning |
| Building out your inventory for real listings | Full Research |
| Deciding between two similar items to source | Lightning |
Lightning is a scouting tool. Full AI research is the production pipeline. Lightning tells you "is this worth my time?" — research tells you "here's exactly what to list it for and how."
Creating Items from Lightning
If a Lightning estimate looks promising, you can convert it directly into an Item. Tap Add to Inventory and the Lightning data pre-fills the item, giving the full research pipeline a head start.
